Cesar's Co-Stars: Profiles of Pack Members - Sueann

Not every member of Cesar’s Pack goes on four legs and barks at the mailman! Cesar surrounds himself daily with exceptional human beings - professional men and women who are fully dedicated to the work being done to rescue and rehabilitate troubled dogs across the nation.

One of the series producers and the director of the majority of Dog Whisperer episodes is SueAnn, who has been working with MPH Entertainment (the production company behind the show) since they launched in the late 90s. In addition to her creative work on the program, SueAnn has become a caretaker for Barnes, a 7-year-old Irish wolfhound/golden retriever mix from the DPC. Great with other dogs, but very protective, Barnes has been improving with help from SueAnn and her husband Bill, using Cesar’s philosophy and techniques. Professionally, her time is split between the office - where she spends it approving cuts, mixes, and final episodes, as well as digging up and scheduling the next great Dog Whisperer stories - and "fieldwork." And that’s where things really start to get interesting.

Of her average day she simply says: there IS no "average" day. Though every shooting day follows a schedule and a routine, the work itself is highly mutable. Once the dog’s bad behavior has been filmed, Cesar arrives on set for the consultation, and this is when, as they say, "the script goes out the window." Anticipating where events will take an episode beyond that point is largely a matter of guesswork and instinct that comes from 5 years on the job.

"I do what I can from the beginning," she says, "but a lot of what it is is being flexible. You’ve got to be flexible... We’ll just roll with it."

The fluid working environment is at once the most exciting and the most demanding and challenging part of the job, and trying to predict what will happen has become a favorite pastime of the on-set crew. A recent episode for the new season is a case in point: a Lhasa Apso with a propensity to eat everything in sight. But with the arrival of the Dog Whisperer crew, her appetite seemed to evaporate. It took several days staying at the DPC for the problem to finally surface, and only then could SueAnn and the crew swoop in with cameras rolling.

At the end of the day, she says, the benefits of being a part of such an emotionally rewarding program outweigh the stresses put upon her by the unconventional nature of the work.

"The people that will just hug you at the end of the day and tell you that their lives have really changed because of him, and because of us being there... the ones who really feel the profound impact of what he says to them, not just as far as their dogs, but in their entire being. Teachers who tell me that they’ve begun to relate to their whole classrooms differently... men saying they relate to their wives differently… When you’re making changes in people’s lives like that - that’s why I got into this business in the first place."
